Purification of both wheat at the start of the milling process and flour at the end was critical to the reputation of any Mill. Giant plan-sifters and purifier units took centre stage on the second and third levels of the main 1891 building. These machines were the “high-tech” of the Mill and needed engineers on-call at all times to ensure that they ran to the highest levels of precision.
Needing the most space in the Mill, these machines have provided the most wonderful space for our Purifying Rooms which combine light, airy and spacious interiors with vaulted high ceilings with original beams. Rooms variously feature original staircases, grain chutes, flywheel assemblies and other equipment used in the purification process. All Purifying Rooms have one or two sash windows with natural light and views over the townsite.
The rooms are all different to varying degrees by virtue of the found condition. Where possible the rooms have exposed remnant machinery and original timber structure. Elements such as inset carpets and full height curtains soften the industrial shell. New elements in the rooms are designed to complement the existing material textures adding amenity without clutter. All in-room furniture has been bespoke designed and locally craft manufactured.
